Joseph J. Compitello, Esq. is an associate with Novins, York and Jacobus. Living initially in Middletown, Joseph grew up in the Mercer County area of New Jersey. He graduated high school from the Lawrenceville School in 1999 and four years later, from Lafayette College in 2003. At Lafayette, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Government and Law and was a member of their Division 1 baseball team.
In February 2007, Joseph received his Juris Doctorate from New York Law School. Mr. Compitello scored among the top 10% on the Pennsylvania bar exam and as a result, obtained an essay grading position for the bar prepatory course, Barbri. Joseph began his legal career in 2005 working as a law clerk and subsequently as an associate for the law firm of Kamensky Cohen and Associates in Trenton.
During that time, he was exposed to a myriad of civil personal injury claims including automobile accidents, slip and falls, dramshop claims, wrongful death and intentional torts. Additionally, he aided in the defense of worker's compensation claims for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. Most significantly, he co-wrote the winning brief in the published appellate case, Golden v. GMAC, 401 N.J. Super. 198 (2008) which redefined the statute of limitations for uninsured motorist claims.
Subsequent to Kamensky Cohen, Joseph also worked with a criminal practice in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, gaining important experience in Pennsylvania courts to complement his New Jersey court experience. During that time, he handled both private clients and court appointed clients that had conflicts with the public defender’s office. Along with his criminal practice, Joseph handled personal bankrupcies and social security benefit appeals.
Following his time in Pennsylvania, Joseph returned to New Jersey to work for the law firm of Garces and Grabler, P.C. handling primarily criminal matters and municipal court matters. While working out of the firm's Trenton and Freehold offices, Joseph represented criminals charged with as serious as first degree felonies to petty disorderly persons offenses. During his time at the firm, he also garnered trial experience. Under the tutelage of Jonathan Kessous, Esq., one of only a handful of attorneys on the landmark State of New Jersey v. Chun New Jersey Supreme Court DWI decision, Joseph possesses the comprehensive knowledge to combat a driving while intoxicated charge.
Professionally, Joseph is admitted to practice in both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania state courts as well as the U.S. District Courts for the District of New Jersey and Easter District of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the American Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, Mercer County Bar Association, and Pennsylvania Bar Association.
Joseph's wife, Michele, a Monmouth University graduate, works for the State of New Jersey in the Department of Youth and Family Services in Ocean County.
